I think there's a wide middle band of people, often personally generous, who don't use libertarianism as a righteous religion or an excuse not to give Jack, but who - shall we say? - have embraced counsels of despair concerning the prospects for doing better-than-market good beyond their immediate circles. A couple of examples come to mind right away. In some ways, I'm still emerging from their ranks myself.
I should very much like to prove despair as wrong in this context, as it is in pretty much every other.
And yes, the intartubes can be very very depressing indeed, when they get to ringing with the rattle of the emptiest vessels. I've heard that happen a time or two, myself. ;-)
